Contortionists Unite!

Public Network for Contortionists

Hey guys,
Earlier this year I attended the national unicycling champs in wollongong. It was a great group of weird and wonderful people all together to do what they love.. n it got me thinking.. We really need some sort of event to bring together aussie contortionists, and contortionists living in australia.
Any thoughts? Reckon its possible?

I like that idea. Even an informal meet and greet would be fun to exchange stories, tips and get advice. Biggest hurdle would be the fact that we're stretched quite thin here in Aust but if it looks like something might happen, yeah, I'm interested.

II'm interested in this as well. I think the interest of contortion is underestimated in Australia and it would be a great thing for everyone to come together and share their experiences.

Any idea of where? n how to get the word out?

Yes! WOW What an exciting idea! I love it and I will definately be there! Why should aussie contortionists have to travel overseas for contortion conventions when we could arrange one right here? I am so inspired always to be meeting other people dedicated to their flexibility, as I am. There are contortionists out there that we could invite if you know where to look, I can name 3 circus schools of the top of my head that we could contact if there were an event organised for this.

So, what date should we have it on? I was thinking maybe in the next school holidays, ie October (how long do you think it would take to organise?) Id be happy help out do some of the organising. I had this idea that we could have it somewhere in the bush, Like they do the circus festivals. And we could camp out somewhere. My vision is we could run it a bit like the contortion convention that runs overseas, ie have performances, classes and maybe even talks on how to stretch safely and look after your body. Jasmine George might be a good start for ideas on this. I will message her and see what she thinks? Alternatively we could all go up to her studio at Coffs Harbour (and have a relaxing holiday at the same time!) Next question, how long should it go for? Do you think 3-4 days is a good amount of time?

Anyway if we don't get something formal up we (the ning contortion people) could just meet inofrmally someplace? I may be visiting Wagga soon in the next month or so so I could catch up with you Mim?

This is such a good idea! I personally have no idea how to organise something like this but for advertisement purposes maybe try getting in contact with ACAPTA (http://www.acapta.net/01_about/index.htm) because they send out a monthly newsletter to basically most of the Australian circus community. ?

but yeah i have no idea where it should be held.

Coffs Harbour would be nice! Or.. Wagga is smack bang in between Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, which seems to be the cities most people are based. I'm happy either way. October seems very soon. Would December maybe be more realistic? Or is that time of year too busy? Thats a great idea to inform ACAPTA! Once we get some idea of what we are doing.
3-4 days would be good. Over a weekend. Many performances and classes would be really good. Even other unrelated social activities. Glad people are so keen =D I've been thinking about it for a while..

Wow, Sounds great! Coffs Harbour =)
Time of year? Whats best for people?

If you choose to do this in October you'll have to be careful as I don't believe the different states school/uni holidays are particularly well synced. Having said that, I personally don't mind taking a few days off. December does seem the better option, though.
I'm really liking the ideas coming out of this. Great work MiM. Can't wait to see how this pans out.

OK December in Coffs Harbour is sounding good to me! When the school holidays are on but before Xmas obviously. Summer time is always good for stretching too :) That gives us time to get word out on ACAPTA and at the circus schools around Australia. Does anyone know of any contortion performers or people that could come and give talks? Availability of these people might help to inform our decision on what date to hold the event?
