I seem to be hearing a lot about Nica specifically from my friends for a reason... That's the only serious circus course there? Wow, in a country over 5 times our size too... (Shrugs) I just don't know what to make of it. But for what it's worth, I'm very glad you & your friends seem to have caught a good vibe from us. It IS quite comfortable from personal experience, I mean "I" of all people managed to make friends there. Before I discovered the place, life was quite lonely.
Like I've mentioned before, we try to make everyone from everywhere feel welcome. And if I may say so myself, NZ has many natural beauties to offer the adventurous tourist. So friends of yours have been & gone ahead of you, seen good things to talk about & you've liked what you heard, eh?
It is indeed a well-crafted, high-quality program, even though it still can't fit me in.
K.B.G. :-)
Enjoy your party break. (I know we do ours...)
Don't hold your breath then, I'm sure they'll get to you at the right time. Yes, Mr Godfrey Sim was a very open-minded/hearted director/man, & Circo Arts will miss him badly. I certainly hope his replacement will do him justice.
Yep, I was certain someone who has your kind of photos to their name would have offers pouring in up to their ears, which made me wonder, with all the much more prestigious/resourceful schools closer to your area, why would you pick a tiny little training school which happens to be the only one of its kind in a modest, 2-island country like NZ? All WE can boast to our name is clean water! But we'll do our best to make you feel welcome, I'll make sure of that :-)
My training is continuing at its regular pace, & will soon take a summer sabbatical with the oncoming holidays, which is sad because I only just got back on the pole after taking 3 months to find the proper shoes!
The showcase went spectacularly, & the best way to acquire photos/videos of any of the pieces would be if you are a facebook member, & have Circo Arts friends on there.
Which reminds me of what I meant to ask earlier, how & what did you hear about us?
I'm horse-healthy, thank you...
K.B.G.
Just wanted to ask among the usual things, like how your training's proceeding, if your application for Circo Arts has been answered yet. If it hasn't, I can talk to the appropriate people for you. The most recent director of the facility has recently retired, last week's Circus Under The Stars show was his very last piece of work. So I, like many, am curious to meet his replacement, hope that he'll be as nice as his predecessor, & that if, I say IF you're still planning on coming down here to little old NZ, it'd be a pleasure to meet you in person.
Yours sincerely,
K.B.G. :-)
That's very reassuring to know. Nope, I certainly don't let who I am stand in my way, I only think about how it can help me. I have absolutely no intention of allowing my training in what I love to cease :-)
Being open helps a lot. I found it challenging also, not only because of the initial difficulty of doing things that didn't come naturally, but also coping with the negative reinforcement surrounding them from my teachers. (Which point do you understand again?) & the other contortionist is a 2nd year, nearly a graduate, & she's got so many good jobs going for her.
These Chinese Poles are hard to do anything on, one of them's got gaffer tape wound around it while the other's just painted metal, neither of them have the rubber coating professionals use. But it's still fun ;-)
Yes, I do have a functional training venue. I'd love to be able to meet you around the place sometime, you seem like a friendly person.
I should tell you one important thing in advance about me, being direct & clear in your wording & intent works best with me, otherwise, even though we speak the same language I still won't understand you. Those who don't acknowledge that fact early on end up getting burned by it somehow, & it always ends up being my fault.
Yes, I know it takes them awhile, but they always prioritize live/local auditions over foreign/pre-taped ones. Don't worry, if your postage details were in order they'll get back to you before December's gotten too far in.
Yep, only 25-30 people, after all, the performing arts not having as many resources/sponsors as other larger countries, only a select few people are even interested in applying for this course, it being the only one of its kind in this humble little country. The building itself can only allow maximum 50 people inside at any given time, not for size reasons, but for safety. (It's not too late to change your mind.)
But on the upside, it's extremely village-like in that everyone knows everyone well, & concentrating on quality rather than quantity, we tend to bond closely & maintain relationships that last well beyond graduation. After all, 4 years of part-time training & I haven't been banned from the premises yet.
The only Australian circus school I've heard of is NICA, & by the sound of it they seem to be much more focused on specialization than generalization... But that's just what I heard through the grapevine.
You're welcome for any encouragement I can give, & thank you in turn for your comfort.
K.B.G. :-)
Okay, they said it's NOT that I lack the physical abilities, NOR that my devotion, endurance or creativity are in question, it's that the single biggest factor in their reservations about letting me in is a certain psychological condition I have.
Please don't judge me on this, but I have Aspergers' Syndrome. They said it limited my ability to interact/work with the other students & understand acceptable social boundaries, & I've had too much experience that proves them right. Hope this doesn't frighten you of me.
My expectations of the course are specialised, mainly to Spanish Web, Chinese Pole, & Contortion/Handbalancing/Tumbling. Their curriculum involves training students in a compulsory generalised list of skills which include globe/stilt/tightrope walking, juggling, manipulation & clowning etc. which I'm not planning on using because they don't appeal to me. To top it off, I'm one of only 2 contortionists there, & no-one instructs for Chinese Pole because hardly anyone trains in those arts. Bit of a waste, eh?
I have no choice but to take their advice, for they authorise the right for a student to audition in the 1st place. They've told me "No" straight-out.
It is still possible for graduates/outsiders to train around/between student hours, a deal must simply be made with the heads involving weekly payment & rule abidement.
I have no idea about insurance there, however, the waiver one must sign involves the customary accident-immunity clause, whereby you can't blame them if you're hurt.
No worries, love answering your questions, it just make my replies a bit long if you don't mind.
Between 25-30 people apply annually, & around 19-22 of them get in. Listen carefully: DON'T WORRY, if you have an open mind to new things, & DON'T have any conditions like mine, then as far as I can see from where you are already, you're PERFECT for it.
Welcome, K.B.G. :-)
Thanks, although those ones aren't exactly new, they took me a while to figure out uploading. Nearly 3 mth old, but I'm still not there yet.
The meeting went very well, even though it ended with them telling me that I shouldn't audition. Long story short, they said their course couldn't measure up to my standards, P.S. I'm not kidding. I'll still be training there, but under my own direction. Best luck with yours. (Wanna know the specifics, just ask.)
Hope your exams don't make you stiff :-)
I've only seen tiny bits of the other students acts, but they all look slick. The one I'm working on is where I play my violin onstage with recorded accompaniment to compliment the work of a straps aerialist, my best friend.
If there are any pictures of the show, particularly our piece, I'll try to send them here.
K.B.G. :-)
Thanks for the thought, my training's going well at the moment, I'm finding new ways to expand my back, my left split's practically 180* already, & I'm working along on my right one, it's still got a way to go. My bendy skills are far from performance-ready yet, so I'll be auditioning with a Spanish Rope piece.
Don't know when, I've set up a meeting with Circo Arts' heads for tomorrow morning to discuss a suitable audition time. Yes, 'twill be in person. Sorry for the absense, been helping my friends set up Circus Under The Stars, the annual student showcase.
How're you?
